Florebius is a combination of the two characters that composer, writer, and editor, Robert Schumann created to communicate his multifaceted views of music and life. Florestan and Eusebius symbolized two sides of Schumann's personality, with strongly contrasting temperaments: Florestan, wild and impetuous -- the Dionysian; Eusebius, structured and reflective -- the Apollonian. In the main music journal of his day, the Neue Zeitschrift fuer Musik, Schumann reviewed performances by composing dialogues between both sides of his nature, that readers might understand multiple views of the truth.
The name Florebius, then, implies bringing these two facets of creativity back together. It symbolizes a recombination of self, knowledge, and taste -- a commitment to drawing from all facets of life and art in pursuit of the highest.
