Modern German History and Historiography

This course will survey the history and historiography of Modern Germany, with some emphasis on cultural and intellectual approaches.

The course will be structured as follows. We will survey literature covering the sweep of modern German History from the late 19th century to the late 20th century.

The goal will be to provide a general familiarity with German political and social history, while considering how cultural and intellectual historiography has contributed to that field.

Students will be required to present and discuss materials at each seminare meeting. Students will be required to write two book reviews (5-7 pp.) and one synthetic review essay (10-15 pp.)
