Location

Loyola University Chicago's Water Tower Campus is located at 820 N. Michigan Ave., along Chicago's Magnificent Mile and west of Chicago's famous landmark, Water Tower. The conference will be held in our new facility at 25 E. Pearson. The 25 E. Pearson Building has six floors of library facilities, four floors of class rooms, three floors dedicated to School of Law library, three floors of faculty and administrative offices for the School of Business and IHIR/CORD, computer labs, an auditorium, the Information Technologies department offices, and a penthouse-level reception room.

Plenary Speakers

Our first plenary speaker on Friday is Dr. Richard Epstein, Department of Computer Science, from West Chester State University of Pennsylvania. He will speak to us on Everything you Always Wanted to Know About the Future but were Afraid to Ask. Dr. Epstein will present a collection of short stories that explore the social, ethical and spiritual implications of technology by creating a possible future in which technology plays a major role. You will learn about the rallying cry of the year 2028, namely: "Don’t let your genetic information fall into the wrong hands!" A dire warning if there ever was one!

On Saturday morning Dr. Carl Mitcham, Associate Professor and Director of the Science, Technology and Society Program at Penn State University, will address the conference on Why we Should Learn to Say no to Technology. In his talk Dr. Mitcham will point out that in this new technoscientific world with high tech connections, there seems to be a lack of deep community social fabric, and that therefore saying NO will be mostly an individual and personal act. Another paper by Dr. Mitcham, Notes for a Hypertext on the Emergence and Transcendence of Computer Ethics, is available.

Cooperative Effort

The committee is proud to announce that a cooperative effort has been established to bring you the conference this year and in succeeding years. This cooperative effort was created by combining talents and resources from Loyola University Chicago, Santa Clara University and Boston College. The Center for Ethics and the School of Business from Loyola have joined with the Markkula Center for Ethics from Santa Clara University to share resources and ideas to bring you this conference. Dr. Richard Spinello from Boston College has agreed to join forces and bring his university’s resources into play in order to bring to you a similar conference in the future. Santa Clara will host the next conference in this series in 1998, Boston College will host the conference in 1999. Thereafter the conference will rotate among the three hosts. Dr. David Ozar from the Center for Ethics at Loyola, and Dr. Ronald J. Kizior from the Management Science Department of the School of Business at Loyola, along with Fr. Tom Shanks, the Executive Director of the Markkula Center, have been busy planning the conference this year. The committee would also like to thank Mrs. Carol McClory from Santa Clara who has been a key component in helping to keep the lines of communication open between these three spatially distant universities.
